Terrorist Fist Jab?

Posted on: July 6, 2008

This is old news, but I was reminded of it at a 4th of July party.  About a month ago, Barack Obama sealed the Democratic nomination.  After his nomination speech, he exchanged a fist bump with his wife.  Pretty standard gesture to most people who pay any attention to modern culture.  The traditional media, however, showed their ignorance by actually making this a news story.  The worst of these “news” stories came from Fox News, where E.D. Hill suggested the gesture might be a “terrorist fist jab.”  Watch here:

The next week, Hill apologized for her statement, claiming she was simply reporting on what the media was saying about the fist bump.  She didn’t reveal which other media sources were suggesting secret terrorist signals.

It is ironic, but not surprising, that the anchor of a show called “America’s Pulse” is so out of touch with popular culture.  To be fair, this little snafu isn’t a big deal.  However, it is an example of a general frustration I have with the media.  It bugs me when pundits analyze whether or not a candidate is “in touch” with the “average American.”  What defines an average American?  And who are you to say a candidate is out of touch?  Do you have some statistics to show me?  Are you even in touch with the “average American?”  Probably not.  The guy in this next video isn’t.  David Brooks claims Obama wouldn’t fit in at an Applebee’s salad bar.  The problem is, Applebee’s doesn’t have a salad bar.
